Understanding COGS Error Notifications in the ProfitTree Dashboard

ProfitTree highlights COGS issues anywhere they impact your profit tracking. These notifications appear in two places:

  • Products Reports

  • Listing Reports

You fix all COGS issues inside:

  • COGS Management

Below is what each error means and how to resolve it.

1. Missing COGS (Red Triangle Icon)

You’ll see a red warning icon next to the COGS column when:

  • The product has recorded sales

  • COGS has not been entered

This is the most important COGS error because ProfitTree cannot calculate profit without COGS.

How to fix it

  1. Go to COGS Management

  2. Open the product

  3. Enter your COGS value

  4. Click Update

2. Missing COGS With No Sales (“COGS = $0” but no red icon)

If a product has never sold, you may see:

  • COGS = $0.00

  • No error icon

This means you have not entered a cost yet, but it isn't urgent.

How to fix

Add the correct COGS when you are ready to track profit for this product.

3. “Missing COGS” Count in Products Reports

In Products Reports, you may see a number under Missing COGS.

This count represents the number of sold units missing COGS.

Fix

Edit COGS for the product in COGS Management so all past orders can inherit the correct cost.

4. COGS Issues Filter (Green Checkbox)

Turning on the COGS Issues filter shows:

  • Products that have sales

  • But are missing COGS

This filter surfaces only the items that require immediate attention.

5. Edit COGS Modal Warning (Blue Info Box)

When updating COGS manually, you may see:

“We couldn't match COGS to all orders where this product was fulfilled. Any order fulfilled by print-on-demand providers will automatically be attributed.”

This message appears when:

  • A SKU has been used in different listings

  • Or the cost does not apply to all matching orders

  • Or integrated POD cost may override manual cost

Fix

If the product is from Printify/Printful → connect integrations

If it’s handmade → ensure SKU is consistent across listings

If the SKU changed → update COGS history accordingly

6. Without SKU Error

A product will show this error when:

  • It has sales

  • But no SKU was present in Etsy at the time of sale

SKUs are required for:

  • Grouping listings

  • Bulk COGS uploads

  • Accurate ProfitTree matching

Fix

  1. Add a SKU inside Etsy (never only inside ProfitTree)

  2. Wait for auto-sync

  3. COGS Management will now allow proper cost assignment

7. Where to Fix All COGS Errors

Even though errors are visible in:

  • Products Reports

  • Listing Reports

All fixes happen in:

✔ COGS Management

This is where you can:

  • Enter new COGS

  • Edit incorrect COGS

  • Fix SKU conflicts

  • Edit COGS history
