How ProfitTree Calculates Niche Score?

Niche Score is a great indicator to use when selecting your niche

ProfitTree's Niche Score is designed to help you quickly answer an important question:

How attractive does this keyword opportunity look compared with other keywords in the marketplace?

Instead of making you analyze dozens of different numbers yourself, ProfitTree looks at multiple marketplace signals and turns them into an easy-to-understand Niche Score from 0–100.

The higher the score, the stronger the potential opportunity appears based on the data available to ProfitTree.

What Does Niche Score Look At?

Our Niche Score analyzes several important marketplace signals. While our exact scoring methodology is proprietary, here are the major factors that can influence a keyword's score.

🔎 Shopper Demand

First, we look at the estimated level of shopper interest around a keyword.

Are people actually searching for products related to this keyword?

Generally, stronger search activity can indicate a larger pool of potential shoppers. However, high search volume by itself doesn't necessarily mean you've found a great opportunity.

That's because we also need to consider the competition.

🎯 Demand vs. Competition

This is an important part of identifying potential opportunities.

Imagine two streets where you're thinking about opening a lemonade stand.

One street has 1,000 thirsty people, but there are already 500 lemonade stands trying to sell to them.

Another street has 500 thirsty people, but only 20 lemonade stands.

Which street would you rather sell on?

Even though the first street has more potential customers, the second may provide a much better opportunity.

ProfitTree analyzes the relationship between shopper demand and marketplace competition to help identify keywords where there may be room for sellers to compete.

💰 Revenue Potential

Searches are great, but sellers ultimately want customers who buy.

That's why ProfitTree also considers marketplace signals related to revenue and sales potential.

This helps us distinguish between niches that may receive plenty of attention and niches where that attention also appears to translate into purchasing activity.

Revenue is one part of the bigger picture and should never be viewed as a guarantee of future sales.

📈 Market Trends

Markets change.

Some products and search terms are becoming more popular, while others may be slowing down.

ProfitTree considers historical marketplace and search signals to help identify whether interest in a keyword appears to be growing, stable, or declining.

Trends are considered alongside the other factors rather than being used by themselves to determine whether a niche is attractive.

🏆 Competitive Strength

Having competitors isn't necessarily bad. In fact, competition can be a sign that a healthy market exists.

But there's a difference between entering a market where sellers regularly have opportunities to compete and entering one dominated by deeply established competitors.

ProfitTree analyzes several competitive signals to help understand how established and competitive a market appears to be.

This gives Niche Score additional context beyond simply counting how many listings exist.

What Do the Niche Score Colors Mean?

ProfitTree makes it easy to spot potential opportunities by grouping Niche Scores into color-coded ranges.

🟢 Green — Higher Opportunity

These keywords rank among the stronger opportunities within the keywords ProfitTree evaluates.

🟡 Yellow — Typical Opportunity

These keywords fall within a more typical range and may still be worth investigating depending on your product and strategy.

🔴 Red — Lower Opportunity

These keywords currently show less attractive opportunity signals compared with other keywords ProfitTree evaluates.

In general, higher is better.

However, you shouldn't choose a product based solely on its Niche Score.

Is Niche Score Just Search Volume?

No—and that's an important distinction.

A keyword could have enormous search volume and still receive a lower Niche Score if the marketplace appears extremely competitive.

Likewise, finding a keyword with almost no competition doesn't necessarily make it a great niche if very few shoppers are interested in it.

ProfitTree is looking for the balance between:

Demand + Opportunity + Market Potential

That's what makes Niche Score different from simply sorting keywords by search volume.

Does a Niche Score of 85 Mean I Have an 85% Chance of Success?

No.

Niche Score is not a probability of success.

For example:

Niche Score: 85 🟢

does not mean you have an 85% chance of making money with that keyword.

It means ProfitTree's marketplace data indicates that the keyword currently displays relatively strong opportunity signals compared with other keywords we evaluate.

Your actual results can depend on many factors, including:

  • Your product

  • Pricing

  • Product images

  • Listing quality

  • Customer reviews

  • Conversion rate

  • Branding

  • Marketing

  • Customer demand

  • Changes in the marketplace

Think of Niche Score as a research shortcut, not a guarantee.

What Is Confidence?

You may also see Confidence alongside some of ProfitTree's research data.

These two measurements tell you different things:

Niche Score answers:

How attractive does this opportunity appear?

Confidence answers:

How confident is ProfitTree in the data available for evaluating this opportunity?

Confidence considers the quality, completeness, and freshness of the marketplace data available to ProfitTree.

When researching a niche, we recommend considering both the Niche Score and the underlying data before making a decision.

Where Can I Find Niche Score?

Niche Score is available within ProfitTree's research tools, including Keyword Finder and supported searches within Product Finder.

When a Niche Score isn't displayed for a particular type of search, it generally means there isn't a meaningful single-keyword Niche Score to show for that search.

Rather than displaying a potentially misleading number, ProfitTree may leave the score out.

How Should I Use Niche Score?

Niche Score works best as a starting point for your product research.

For example, you might use it to quickly identify promising keywords and then investigate them further using ProfitTree's other data and research tools.

Don't automatically assume:

High Niche Score = I should sell this.

Instead, think:

“This looks interesting. Let me investigate it.”

Look at the products being sold, pricing, competitors, estimated demand, keyword opportunities, trends, and whether you can create something customers would have a reason to choose.

The Simple Version

Think about the lemonade stand again. 🍋

Before opening your stand, you'd probably want to know:

Are there thirsty people here?

Are there already too many lemonade stands?

Are people actually buying lemonade?

Is this area becoming more or less popular?

How difficult will the existing competition be to compete with?

ProfitTree analyzes marketplace signals like these and turns them into one simple 0–100 Niche Score.

Higher Niche Score = potentially more attractive opportunity.

It helps you find places worth digging into without spending hours trying to make sense of every piece of marketplace data yourself.
